is asked for in paragraph 1 of your despatch, that the increase was of the vote for Repairs from $21,000 to $25,000 under the Head of Works and Buildings, not in consequence of damage done by the great rain storm of May last year, but because it was evident from the condition of several important buildings that the amount expended on them in past years had not proved sufficient to maintain them in an efficient state of repair. Mr Brown states that the increase in the item for maintenance of Water works from $5,000 in 1889 to $8,000 was made with the view of placing the
